You can’t win elections in this country by appealing to only one or few groups of voters. That’s essentially been the problem with the Republican Party. In the last 8 years they relied on their bread and butter of fiscal conservatives and Southern Christians. That’s a good start and certainly a winning combination but it’s a bit homogeneous. For the GOP to make serious gains against the current Democrat Party it must make overtures to everyone, especially minorities. I’ve always made the argument that the GOP is not racist, it’s ambivalent. Race was not the issue so much as class was. At this juncture the GOP can’t just assume certain groups are going to side with the Dems and therefore ignore them. As incoming RNC Chairman Michael Steele says below, “We’re going to say to friend and foe alike: ‘We want you to be a part of us, we want you to with be with us.’…There is not one inch of ground that we’re going to cede to anybody.” That’s exactly the kind of attitude and leadership the GOP needs right now. We have to become strong enough to take the fight to the Democrats, even in their strongholds like NY, CA, IL, WA and MA. The Dems have won these past two years not on the strength of ideas or better candidates but precisely because they attacked in GOP strongholds and in many cases won. Now is an excellent opportunity to find minority conservatives from all over the country to take back leadership of Washington and steer us away from becoming the socialist wasteland that the Democrats have planned for us. Good luck Mr. Steel, we are all counting on you.
