Last but not least: it turns out that the tea parties don’t represent a spontaneous outpouring of public sentiment. They’re AstroTurf (fake grass roots) events, manufactured by the usual suspects. In particular, a key role is being played by FreedomWorks, an organization run by Richard Armey, the former House majority leader, and supported by the usual group of right-wing billionaires. And the parties are, of course, being promoted heavily by Fox News.

You’re as wrong now as you used to be back in the Army in 1967-70. The Tea Parties weren’t Astro-Turf. I witnessed the formation of the one here in Jacksonville, Florida and participated. It was pure spontaneity, and not organized (if you were there, you’d have seen the lack of organization).
But it was the beginning of an attempt to organize a rather politically and socially diverse segment of the population that is fed up with both major parties, and in particular, Obama and the Democrats.
